From what I've seen, That error can be really frustrating, but good on you for doing a backup first! Your File History backup is perfect for restoring your personal files like photos and documents, so you're covered there. If you'd like, I can help you troubleshoot the upgrade error next—just let me know what step it's failing on.
I’m finally trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11, but the setup keep?

I’m finally trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11, but the setup keeps failing with error code 0xC1900101. My main worry is my files. I did a full backup to an external drive using File History before starting, but now I’m paranoid. Is that backup actually enough to restore everything if this goes wrong, or should I be making a system image instead? I don’t want to lose years of photos and documents.

Can confirm. Yeah, that backup should cover you. A quick tip: also temporarily disconnect any non-essential USB devices before trying the upgrade again—that error can sometimes be caused by peripheral drivers.

Can confirm. I had the same problem. That File History backup saved me when I finally did a clean install.

Thanks! One more question though... if I use this File History backup, will it also bring back all my programs and settings, or just the files?

Another option is to use the built-in "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" tool for a more complete system image that includes programs. Good luck!

You could also try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it's fixed that error for a lot of people.

Yeah, that backup should be fine, but to be safe, can you tell me what step of the setup it fails on?
