Trying to upgrade to Windows 11 but I’m stuck on the TPM check?

Post by al7688312981 »

Trying to upgrade to Windows 11 but I’m stuck on the TPM check. The PC Health Check app says “This PC must support TPM 2.0” but my computer is only a few years old. I’ve gone into the BIOS and found a TPM setting, enabled it, but now I get error code 0x80070490. Is there a specific way it needs to be configured, or is this a driver issue? Really frustrated as everything else meets the requirements.

Quick tip: I had this issue with a fairly new laptop. For me, enabling TPM in the BIOS wasn't enough; I also had to switch from "Discrete TPM" to "Firmware TPM" in the security settings. After that, a simple reboot let the check pass.

Thanks! I switched it to Firmware TPM, but now my computer won't boot and just shows a blue screen. What should I do?

Yeah, that's a common snag. Try clearing the TPM from your BIOS menu—it often resolves that blue screen. Hope that helps.

Same here. If clearing it didn't work, have you checked if your TPM firmware itself needs an update from your PC manufacturer's website?

+1 You could also try a clean install using the Media Creation Tool, which sometimes bypasses upgrade-specific errors.

Same here. Before trying a clean install, have you double-checked that the TPM is actually set to version 2.0 in the BIOS, not 1.2? Hope that helps.

+1 Also, after you switch it to 2.0, you might need to clear the TPM from within Windows before the upgrade will see it properly.

Same here. I had the same problem. For me, clearing the TPM in Windows Security like they mentioned finally got the upgrade to go through. Hope that helps.
